The Second Chapter Index

How the Second Chapter Index works

See what the evidence says — and how we got there. This methodology is a working draft (v0.1) and will be finalised before the inaugural results.

Who participates
People living outside the country they grew up in, at any stage of their new chapter. Second Chapter members and non-members can both take part.
How participants are recruited
Through Second Chapter, partner communities and open invitations. We'll publish where responses came from, because recruitment shapes results.
Survey design
Twelve short sections, about ten minutes. Almost every question is optional. Ratings use the same five-point scale throughout so places can be compared fairly.
Country and city eligibility
A country or city is only ranked if it meets the edition's minimum number of reviewed responses. Places below it are listed as 'not enough data' — never estimated.
Minimum sample requirements
Every edition sets a minimum sample per place. The database refuses to publish a figure below that minimum, and every figure is shown with its sample size.
Weighting
Each pillar combines three kinds of evidence: member experience (survey responses), objective evidence (independently sourced data, always cited), and — only for you — your personal priorities.
Confidence
Every published figure carries a low, medium or high confidence label based on sample size and consistency of answers.
Provenance
Every published statistic links to its source, edition and methodology version. Corrections are logged, not silently changed.
Review before publishing
Nothing is published straight from an import. A person must review each figure before it can go live.
Independence
Second Chapter's commercial goals cannot influence the Index. Sponsors, advertisers, partners, Hosts, Guides and affiliates cannot alter scores or rankings. If sponsored content is ever introduced, it will be clearly labelled and kept separate from research.
Editions
Each edition is kept permanently, so changes over time stay visible.
Privacy
Individual answers are never published. Results are reported only as totals across many people. We ask for your consent to use your answers for research before you submit.
